Nadal is the champion of Frence Open Tennis '2011'
Rafael Nadal captured his sixth French Open at Roland Garros with a 7-5 7-6 5-7 6-1 win over Roger Federer. The current king of clay equalled Bjorn Borg’s record. Nadal was only 25 last Friday, in conquered up his 10th Slam.
The 25-year-old's Roland Garros title was his sixth, equalling a feat achieved by only one other in the open era - Bjorn Borg.
Nadal had been undefeated in 101 grand-slam matches after leading two sets to love, and the Spaniard kept this record intact.
In the fourth set, Federer was broken in the fourth and sixth games, allowing Nadal to serve for the match.
After the Swiss hit a forehand long on the first match point, Nadal dropped to his knees, burying his face in his hands as his lifetime coach, Uncle Tony, leapt to his feet shouting "vamos!".
The stats in the 3 hours 40 battle show:
The final again showed Nadal’s lingering display on his service games, often taking long periods between points. He’s made it into an unchallenged art-form.
It’s Nadal’s way of slowing down the speed of the game to his liking. It works a treat, driving opponents spare at the incessant delays, especially Federer, who plays fast.
It’s a rhythm destroyer to a fast player. But Federer got himself into trouble, far too often.
Break point conversions have plagued him all year. It’s hard enough to win without looking gift horses in the mouth.
He had two break points on Nadal’s opening serve, but blew them both. Fortunately he converted the third.
But overall overnight, Federer converted just five of 15 break points – 33% was not enough to get the job done against the calibre of Nadal.
It’s interesting to note that as the tournament unfolded, and the opposition improved, Federer’s break-point conversions worsened.
In the opening four rounds, 19 of 34 were converted – 35.84% – in the last three rounds just 14 of 44 – an incredibly low 24.14%.
But in between the abuse, and the poor break-point conversions, there were many magnificent shots played, their athleticism seemingly boundless.
Total result's were:
# Nadal served at 72%, Federer 63%.
# Struck 39 winners to 53.
# Converted seven of 15 break points to five of 15.
# Nadal made 27 unforced errors to 56.
# And won 143 points to 130.
